Since the beginning of the game project we’ve been trying to figure out what a good name would be. This is really hard to do because there is always emotion mixed up in the choice, it needs to be unique – yet recognizable, it needs to convey some interest and excitement. Add in the need to find domain names, twitter handles and not a minor dose of commitment phobia (!) and it is probably one of the hardest decisions to make.
So we’ve been iterating for months on a variety of ideas, starting with anything goes suggestions, then with taking concepts in different languages, translating them, twisting them and much else.
Finally we have something we’re happy with and others will hopefully like too.
Welcome:
Mitropia
derived from: the Greek word μητρωο (mitroo) which means the surround, to girdle as is the nature of the game.
The name mitropia also has a bit of a mythical touch to it to fit in with our game theme. We hope people like it.
We also have our first logo drafts thanks to Jamie Noble:
We’re looking forward to starting to use these! So baring any disasters with the name (does it mean something offensive in Urdu?), we’re all set on the name front!
Some of the other names which made it close to the finish line but not quite over were: Katati (from Sanskrit for surrounding), Tellerium (from the telling of a story and the chemical element), Polyphia (from the multi-player nature of the game) and Buyan (from the mythical island as a place to play).
You can now find us on twitter and facebook (update coming!). We’ll also be adding a Mitropia domain name for this page.
So exciting! What’s the link for the Facebook page?
