Ah, the wonder of the Kickstarter video. It’s the “tl;dr” for the average user, the quick summary that tells the world in just a few minutes what your project is all about. A Kickstarter video can make or break your project, and for a board game, it’s important to find the balance between flash and function.

While doing research about what we would do for our own Kickstarter video, we’ve seen some truly terrible Kickstarter videos out there. But today, we’re talking about the great ones!

The Quick and Easy Overview Video

We all know it. Exploding Kittens. It’s a wildly successful Kickstarter card game with an adorably weird theme and a simple goal – not to get exploded (by a kitten). The game was slated to be a success — it was made by the same people who made the infamous Cards Against Humanity and Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal. But all that aside, their video is quick, easy, features on-theme animations, and ends with a simple call to action. All under 2 minutes!

The Playthrough Highlight Video

Who Goes There? launched a Kickstarter campaign for their board game with wild success. Their video isn’t a normal playthrough video, nor is it purely focused on thematic elements to draw you in. The video shows a group of people playing the game, focusing on the highlights of the game — what makes it fun and unique, without getting bogged down in too many details. It’s a great blend of overviewing the game, giving us a taste of what gameplay looks like, and immersing us in theme. I dare you to watch the video and not WANT to play!

Of course, these are hugely successful campaigns — we’re probably missing a bunch of awesome videos for smaller campaigns. Let us know if you have any favorites in the comments below!
